Young people at a Top Score workshop

Top Score

Commissioning and performing new music is at at the heart of BCMG’s mission and that also extends to young people. Top Score aimed to share the adventure of commissioning, marketing and performing a new piece of music with young people. It is not a new idea, with many famous composers composing pieces designed for young or non-professional players. Notable examples include Luciano Berio’s Duetti – violin duets specifically designed for young people, and Benjamin Britten’s community opera Noye’s Fludde for young people and amateur musicians. As part of Top Score four new pieces for primary school classes were created by composers Duncan Chapman, Jackie Walduck, Michael Wolters and Tansy Davies. Two of the scores can be downloaded from the links on the right.

The Blind King was composed by Michael Wolters for children (Year 5) from Severne Junior & Infant School in Acocks Green, Birmingham and members of BCMG and was given its world premiere in a concert at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham on 20 April 2005.

Cobra Grande was composed by Jackie Walduck for children (Year 6) from Highters Heath Junior and Infant School, Kings Heath, Birmingham and members of BCMG and was given its world premiere in a concert at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham on 23 March 2006.
