Birmingham Contemporary Music Group will be taking to the water twice in September in a brand new work, Canal Serenade, and we need your help!

Canal Serenade is a free performance on narrow boats on Birmingham’s canals – bringing music right into the heart of Birmingham, and we need volunteers to assist.

Don’t worry – as a volunteer, you’ll be on dry land and training is provided.

There will be two performances, one performance on 10 September as part of BCMG’s Thirtieth Anniversary celebrations, and another on 23 September as part of Birmingham Weekender – an enormous city-wide festival of culture.

Tasks we need help with

The tasks we need help with aren’t onerous but are essential for the smooth-running of the performance. We want you to enjoy the performance as much as the audience members – and you’ll be able to get a sneak peek at our dress rehearsal too.

• The main job will be helping to talk to all the audience members – the general public. For example, many people will stumble across our performance by accident so we will need people to explain what we’re up to – don’t worry, we’ll give you plenty of training and BCMG staff will be on hand for any tricky questions.

• The towpath can be pretty narrow and we’re hoping for a big crowd, so we need people to help keep the towpath clear and keep people moving.

Training and briefings

If you’re free, ideally we’ll need you for all the following dates and times. If you can’t make some of them please do still get in touch – please note timings are still subject to change but we’d give you plenty of notice:

Thurs 7 Sep, Evening Briefing at CBSO Centre and a walk of the event route
Sat 9 Sep, Afternoon Dress rehearsal of the performance
Sun 10 Sep, Afternoon (c.3-5pm) Performance (starting at 4pm)
Sat 23 Sep, Afternoon (c.1.30pm – 3pm) Performance (starting at 2pm) as part of Birmingham Weekender.
