David Sawer studied music at the University of York and subsequently won a DAAD scholarship to study in Cologne with Mauricio Kagel. Drama, or a fascination with theatrical possibilities, is present in many of his works. From Morning to Midnight, a full-length opera commissioned by English National Opera, premiered at the London Coliseum in 2001, and for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, was recorded on the NMC label in 2007 and features on a disc including BCMG recordings of Sawer works Tiroirs and Memory of Water. In 2009, Rumpelstiltskin, a ballet for dancers and ensemble, was premiered by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in Birmingham, touring to Glasgow and the Huddersfield and Spitalfields Festivals. BCMG gives the world premisres of Sawer’s Rumpelstiltskin Suite at the Wigmore Hall in April 2013 and The Lighthouse Keepers at Cheltenham Music Festival in July 2013.
