Composer Howard Skempton

Howard Skempton

Howard Skempton is one of the country’s most individual composers whose work is played by orchestras, ensembles and soloists in Britain and around the world, including BCMG with whom he frequently collaborates on commissions and productions. He studied in London with Cornelius Cardew from 1967 and Cardew helped him to discover a musical language of great simplicity. Since then he has continued to write undeflected by compositional trends, producing a corpus of more than 300 works. His orchestral work, Lento, commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, has become a cult classic.
