Ondrej AdamekCanal Serenade was a celebration of Birmingham’s canals: music travelling on water, by narrow boat; a serenade for a city built on investing in the new. Ondrej's first Sound Investment, Share the Space formed part of the single work jointly written by Richard Baker, Yannis Kyriakides and Adámek, and featured our partners Ex Cathedra and BEAST.

We are thrilled to work once again with Ondrej, this time for a commission celebrating Birmingham’s rich cultural identity.

Adámek’s new piece will align with BCMG’s programming to form new creative partnerships with different communities around the city, and the world.

The commission will be the culmination of Adámek’s work with the ensemble in recent years. The composer worked closely with BCMG for our Music in Dialogue series, funded as part of Arts Council England’s Transforming Narratives initiative.

In 2019, BCMG welcomed musicians from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Birmingham to establish cultural exchange between intercontinental musical traditions, with a performance of Adámek’s Karakuri and improvisations, between BCMG’s players and the visiting guest artists. Testament to just how essential such initiatives are, Adámek’s new commission will be written for Bangladeshi singer and multi-instrumentalist, Neel Kamrul.

Support Ondrej's Commission

Born in Prague in 1979, Ondřej Adámek has received commissions from ensembles and contemporary music festivals across Europe. Adámek seeks out new ways of playing classical instruments and his works often feature unconventional instrumentation. Adámek creates dramatic, yet personal, music with a powerful rhythmic architecture.

Ondřej's first piece for BCMG was Share the Space, part of our inaugural Canal Serenade, written for Birmingham's canals. Since it's world premiere we've gone on to the perform the work in Utrecht, for the opening of Gaudeamus Muziekweek.
