Ondřej Adámek's new Sound Investment Commission for Neel Kamrul will be premiered at the September concert Music in Dialogue.

Born in Prague in 1979, Ondřej Adámek has received commissions from ensembles and contemporary music festivals across Europe. Adámek seeks out new ways of playing classical instruments and his works often feature unconventional instrumentation. Adámek creates dramatic yet personal music with a powerful rhythmic architecture.

This new BCMG Sound Investment commission will be the culmination of Adámek’s work with the ensemble in recent years. The composer worked closely with BCMG for our Music in Dialogue project, funded by Arts Council England’s Transforming Narratives initiative.

Following on from Share the Space for BCMG’s inaugural Canal Serenade, we are once again thrilled to work with the comp
oser, this time for a commission celebrating Birmingham’s rich cultural identity.

Ondřej Adámek | Neel Kamrul

In 2019, we hosted our inaugural Music in Dialogue exchange in partnership with Transforming Narratives. We welcomed musicians from Bangladesh and Pakistan to join us for learning activity with schools from across Birmingham, as well as performances at CBSO Centre and University of Birmingham. We performed Adámek’s Karakuri and improvisations, between BCMG musicians and our guests.

Music in Dialogue was unprecedented in its reach and depth of interaction. It brought together artists who may never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.

Such exchanges are made possible in part thanks to the cultural heritage and diversity of our city, Birmingham, and the wider West Midlands, as well as initiatives led by organisations, like Arts Council England and Transforming Narratives.

Who would’ve thought Ondřej’s meeting with Bangladeshi multi-instrumentalist Neel Kamrul would form the cornerstone of the composer’s new Sound Investment piece? Often, the most furtive creative moments are born of coincidence.

Adámek’s piece for Neel Kamrul will be a celebration of music as a universal language; a language we all speak and with which we can all communicate.

How do composer and soloist, seemingly worlds apart, find a common musical language?
