Melinda Maxwell

Join us Wednesday 17 November between 5 and 6pm for an online chat with Melinda Maxwell

Musician, improviser, composer with a body of work spanning more than 30 years, Melinda Maxwell is very much a multi-faceted artist.

Maxwell's first piece for the group was coloured by two key events. The first, the completion of a Masters in Jazz from RBC; the second, a bad broken leg suffered leaving the stage after a concert. FRACTURES: Monk Unpacked was given its world premiere in 2015 under the baton of the late Oliver Knussen. Indeed, Knussen actively encouraged Melinda's composing.

Maxwell's new piece is about reflection, refraction, mirroring, and instrumental doubling across the ensemble. Melinda herself will play three instruments: oboe, nadaswaram (Indian oboe) and oboe of the ancient world, the aulos.

Although for the most part composed, the piece will also allow space for structured improvisation across the ensemble.

This event is free to supporters of the recording.
