An insight event celebrating the undeniable impact of Pierre Boulez, 100 years after his birth. Hear some of the wildest sounds created for classical instruments, engage with music that uses ground-breaking technology, and find out more about the life of a visionary musical figure with BCMG Musicians.

We will be joined by author Caroline Potter as she showcases her new highly-praised book, Pierre Boulez: Organised Delirium (2024). Potter explores the influences on Boulez’s early works and how surrealism and French culture in the 1930s and 40s shaped his radical musical ideology. She will read excerpts of her book and take questions from the audience about her work.

Pierre Boulez (1925-2016): Anthèmes II (1997) for violin and electronics

Pierre Boulez: Douze Notations (1946) for solo piano

Pierre Boulez: Sur Incises (1996) for three pianos, three harps, and three percussionists, performed by students from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire
