At Birmingham Contemporary Music Group's heart is an ensemble of superb musicians, whose virtuosity is matched by their commitment and enthusiasm. It is the specialist skills of these players – developed over the years through BCMG – which attract the world’s leading artists to work with the Group.

From the outset, BCMG’s co-founders Simon Clugston and Ulrich Heinen felt that it was important composers should have the freedom to write for whatever instrumentation they chose and not feel obliged to compose for a fixed instrumental line-up. This flexibility continues to enable BCMG to commission and perform a wider variety of music would otherwise be possible.
