An evening of creative magic with internationally renowned artists, Field Notes is a unique collaboration that proves it’s the unfamiliar creative experiences which are often the most memorable and intense.

Using old county maps and graphic scores as common starting points, composer Howard Skempton and artist Matthew Harris have each created a brand new work for this performance. Harris’ freestanding textile artwork will transform the space into both a gallery and a concert hall as four of BCMG’s world-class musicians perform Skempton’s new piece, Field Notes.

In addition, this captivating evening will feature short pieces by other leading composers, a ‘behind-the-scenes’ film including interviews with both Skempton and Harris, and conversation between audience and artists – all in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Visual artist Harris makes abstract artworks constructed through marking, piecing, patching, dyeing, cutting and hand-stitching cloth and paper. Skempton’s joyous, sparse, enigmatic music has featured at the BBC Proms and has been widely performed by many of the UK’s top orchestras and ensembles.

Field Notes receives financial assistance from Arts Council England’s strategic touring fund, The Elmley Foundation and The Colwinston Charitable Trust.
