We are very excited to be bringing back our free Cherry Blossom Concert in collaboration with Ikon Gallery, with new additions of music from Japan. We will also be blossoming in Bristol at the wonderful Arnolfini Gallery, performing with a backdrop of contemporary art.

Have a read below and get ready for the long-awaited T R E E concert, (this is your last chance to support Christian Mason's magical piece, The Singing Tree!) a collection of performances with our BCMG NEXT 22-23 cohort, and much more.

'As the winter departs and is replaced by the blossoming of spring, the changing of seasons continues to be an unfathomable inspiration to creatives. Trees have been honoured since the beginning of time, and today composers continue to refer to them as roots in their life and music.

In keeping with the theme of growth, we go back to nature with Christian Mason’s sound-world, focusing on the “natural” series of overtones. We’ve asked the famous Paul Griffiths to provide a libretto, and he did so, in the shape of a tree.

As artists we have the voice to express the world outside of the concert hall; art has always been positioned between nature and spirit. We want our work to create change from the root, we do this by partnering with important green initiatives; building, if not fighting, for a sustainable relationship with nature.

Before the plant comes the seed; before the fruit the blossom – this is how our first half year 2023 is built, with events in Bristol, open air, and conducted by Kazuki Yamada.  Our Blossoming program creates a special focus on Japanese composers, from the land of the rising sun, who have a strong tradition of celebrating the cherry blossom. We travel to the opening flower with composer Toshio Hosokawa, as if catching the sound world of its spreading leaves, with accompanying pieces by Dai Fujikura mixing eternity with sensuality of the moment. Finally, capturing eternal youth, we celebrate the centenary of György Ligeti.'

T R E E Concert

Birmingham Town Hall, B:Music

The long-awaited T R E E Concert is finally here! Join us in exploring the connections between nature and humankind in an enchanting musical programme that includes the world premiere of Christian Mason’s new Sound Investment commission The Singing Tree, with text by Paul Griffiths, and the textural Concertini for ensemble by Helmut Lachenmann.

T R E E has grown from an idea into multiple activities and workshops for young musicians, extensive digital resources, artwork, real-life planted trees, and a lifelong connection with the amazing Birmingham Trees For Life, and there’s so much more we want to do.

We believe this project is as much for us as it is for our planet, join us to celebrate what we often take for granted and spread the importance of preserving our green spaces, and planting new ones.
